Dr. Matthew Hwu PT, DPT, OCS, CSCS received his Doctorate in Physical Therapy from Western University of Health Sciences and completed an Orthopedic Physical Therapy residency program through Kaiser Permanente, Southern California. He is the founder and co-owner of 1HP, a company providing health and performance services to players, teams, and school esports programs. He has been working in esports since 2015 and is currently the Head of Esports Medicine and Performance at KSE Esports where has developed systems and structures to support the health and performance of the players.

Dr. Jonathan Chung B.Sc. Hons., DC, NASM-CPT received his undergraduate degree with a Major in Life Sciences and a Minor in Economics from Queen’s University in Kingston and his Doctor of Chiropractic from Canadian Memorial Chiropractic College. He has been a chiropractor since 2019 and a member of 1HP since 2020. As part of 1HP Performance Medicine staff he oversees online health initiatives for gamers.

Daniel Bonnar MPsych (Clinical); BSc (Hons), received his psychology Honours and Masters degree from Flinders University in South Australia, where he completed his thesis in the area of behavioural sleep medicine. He began researching and working clinically in esports in 2018. He authored the first published journal article on sleep in esports, and has now published 5 journal articles in total, with more to come Clinically speaking, he consults and has provided sleep services to teams all around the world, including 100 Thieves Team Liquid, Counter Logic Gaming, KSE esports and more.

Dr. Caitlin McGee PT, DPT, MS received her undergraduate degree in Neuroscience and Exercise and Sport Science from Ursinus College and her Doctorate of Physical Therapy from the University of Delaware. She has been working in esports and orthopedic medicine since 2015. She is the co-owner and Performance and Esports Medicine Director of 1HP, a company that provides health and performance services to players, teams, and school esports programs. She is an editor of the Handbook of Esports Medicine, the first clinical textbook for the field of esports health and performance, serves as an associate editor for the Annals of Esports research, and has published research on the topic of tendinopathies in esports.

Elliot Smithson

Dr. Elliot Smithson PT, DPT, MS, ATC, EMT received his undergraduate degree from University of Central Florida in Athletic Training, his Masters from Marshall University in Athletic Training, and his doctorate in Physical Therapy from University of St. Augustine for Health Sciences. He has been working in sports and entertainment medicine since 2013 (Walt Disney World) and Division 1 level (UCF, Marshall University), and transitioned into esports medicine in 2019. He has worked with professional esports teams such as 100 Thieves, Counter Logic Gaming, and Immortals. He is passionate about advancing the line of knowledge in the esports industry and cultivating the next generation of professionals.

Casey Thomas

Casey Thomas MS, RD received his undergraduate degree in Neurobiology from University of California, Irvine, after which he spent five years working in clinical research before deciding to return to school to become a registered dietitian. He has published research on the topic of cognitive supplements in esports and regularly engages as an expert peer reviewer for journals. His unique research background has allowed him to implement protocols that have facilitated significant improvements in body composition, health, and performance among athletes, assisting several teams to championship victories at the D1 collegiate level. He has previously consulted for professional athletes and Olympians, esports programs, universities, and businesses looking to gain a performance edge. His experience in esports includes 100 Thieves, Team Liquid, KSE brands, CLG, and others.

Dr. Jordan Tsai DPT, PT, OCS, is a US Army veteran who served as a combat medic in Iraq from 2007-2008. He then went on to graduate from California University State University, Long Beach with his Bachelors of Science in Kinesiology: Exercise Science before attending the University of Southern California for his Doctorate in Physical Therapy. Jordan has experience working with a variety of orthopedic pathologies and populations ranging from young athletes to older, post-surgical patients. He is also an APTA Credentialed Clinical Instructor and enjoys mentoring DPT students in the clinic. He has experience working in esports with teams such as Cloud 9, Evil Geniuses, and 100 Thieves. In his free time, he enjoys drawing, watching sports, playing video games, and traveling.

Dr. Kevin Ho PT, PhD, is an Associate Lecturer in the Discipline of Physiotherapy at the School of Health Sciences. He completed his PhD about the relationship between sleep and musculoskeletal pain in 2020 at the University of Sydney. His current research investigates the prevalence and management of musculoskeletal injuries in esports.

Dr. Nick Fulco

Nicholas Fulco PT, DPT, Cert. DN is a Physical Therapist working in outpatient orthopaedics and sports rehab. He received his undergraduate from Louisiana Tech University in Kinesiology and Health Sciences in Ruston, Louisiana. He then received a Doctorate in Physical Therapy from the University of St. Augustine for Health Sciences in St. Augustine, Florida. He has worked with professional, collegiate, high school, and recreational esports and traditional sports since 2019 and currently operate in a sports medicine clinical setting. His gaming passions include FPS, MOBA, and Battle Royale games. He is a contributing author to the esports health and performance institute and is involved with the team services at 1HP.

Dr. Jennifer Thai DPT, PT, OCS graduated from UCLA with a Bachelors of Science in Physiological Science in 2010 and completed a UCLA Sports Medicine Internship working alongside the Women’s Rowing team. She attended University of Southern California for her Doctorate in Physical Therapy. She is also a Board Certified Orthopedic Clinical Specialist, APTA Credentialed Clinical Instructor, and is Blood Flow Restriction Training certified. She enjoys working with those who are interested in pursing physical therapy as a profession through mentorship of PT candidates and student physical therapists. Her esports experience includes working in the LCS with teams such as TSM, Team Liquid, and Cloud 9. When she is not at the clinic, she is spending time with her family, attempting to explore and travel with a toddler, and watching sports.

Dr. Ryan Terao PsyD, is an esport and licensed clinical psychologist. Dr. Terao specializes in working with esport athletes, coaches, and organizations to develop their competitive identities and learn how to regulate thoughts, feelings, and behaviors to better perform online and IRL. As there is no one path for success, Dr. Terao seeks to understand his client’s life context, values, and style to support their goals and strive towards their own win conditions.
Dr. Terao’s clinical training serves as the foundation for his work and gives him the tools to not just improve his client’s in-game performance, but their overall mental health. By considering the complete athlete and/or team, Dr. Terao utilizes effective cognitive and behavioral strategies to manage different in game and real world factors that affect performance.
Dr. Terao enjoys walking alongside esport athletes and developing custom strategies that enables them to get out of their head and embrace the experience of competition. Dr. Terao aims to develop more intentional competitors that are able to assert control and discipline in every situation. Most importantly Dr. Terao trains players to be cognitively flexible and utilize their critical thinking to rise above their challenges.
